Montoya gets sports car deal with Penske
16 August 2017 – Juan Pablo Montoya will return to full-time competition in 2018, after signing a deal to race for Penske in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Montoya, a seven-time Grand Prix winner, was part of Penske's full IndyCar line-up from 2014 to 2016, though lost his seat to Josef Newgarden for 2017.
Penske organised a fifth entry for Montoya at this year's Indianapolis 500, where he finished sixth, a fortnight after taking 10th at the Indy road course event.
Montoya's ties with Penske will now extend into 2018, as part of the recently-announced Acura Daytona Prototype International (DPi) programme.
"I have really enjoyed working with [team owner] Roger and Team Penske over the last four years," said Montoya.
"When Roger asked if I'd like to be part of starting this new sports car operation with Acura, it was an easy decision.
"I've always loved racing sports cars. It's definitely a challenge and it's going to be a lot of fun to develop a new car with Acura.
"Team Penske started its winning tradition in sports cars and it's going to be cool to be a part of a new chapter with the team."
Dane Cameron, the reigning IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar series champion (prototype), will race alongside Montoya in one of two planned entries.
