Red Bull adds four karters to Junior Team
22 September 2017 – Red Bull has added four karters to its Junior Team line-up for the 2018 season.
OK World Championship karter Dennis Haugar (14) and OK World Junior Championship karters Johnny Edgar (13), Harry Thompson (13) and Jack Doohan (14) have been signed up.
All four will be in action in this weekend's CIK-FIA World Championships and CIK-FIA World Junior Championships being held at the PF International Kart Circuit near Nottingham.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said at the recent Belgian Grand Prix that the drinks company has been looking to karting in a bid to find its next Formula 1 World Champion.
"I think there are periods of stellar drivers that seem to come through the sport," he said.
"For me, if I look outside of Formula 1 at the moment, there seems to be a bit of a gap... there are a couple strong drivers in F2, there are a couple in GP3, but there seems to be a bit of a void.
"We're going to grass roots, we're supporting some youngsters even in karting."
British youngsters Edgar and Thompson will be karting again in 2018, while Haugar, from Norway, and Doohan, the son of of Australian motorcycle legend Mick, will join Arden in British F4.
Red Bull's full junior line-up and further details "will be announced later".
Richard Verschoor, Niko Kari, Dan Ticktum and Neil Verhagen were on the programme in 2017, along with Pierre Gasly, who is pushing for a Formula 1 promotion with Toro Rosso.
