FE expects to be only series left by 2040

10 January 2018 – Formula E chief Alejandro Agag reckons the series could be the only viable championship left by 2040, overtaking Formula 1 in the process, "because the world will be electric".

Formula E was hailed as "the start of the future for electric and environmentally conscious racing" when it launched back in 2014, with the aim of becoming the first carbon-neutral motorsport.

It has attracted a host of companies and manufacturers, keen to explore a greener and more sustainable form of racing, which all takes place on street tracks in major cities.

Car giants such as Audi, Jaguar and Renault are already involved in the series, with Mercedes and Porsche to follow in coming seasons.

In an interview with ESPN, Agag said: "I think Formula E is going to get really, really big.

"I believe that in 20, 30, 40 years, we will be the only motorsport out there. There may be others, but we will be probably the main motorsport because the world will be electric.

"If the world is not electric in 20 or 30 years, we are in trouble, so even if that happens then Formula E will be the championship of the cars."

Agag admits that he has been surprised by Formula E's rapid growth, off the back of a new title sponsorship deal with technology company ABB.

"We are far beyond our expectations from when we launched the project," he said.

"To sign a title partnership like this, with a company like ABB, it's another huge step.

"We wouldn't have imagined this when we started the project, so we keep getting good surprises, so I think that probably means that we are moving in the right direction."
