Buemi: Fanboost issue contributed to defeat
14 January 2018 – Sébastien Buemi pinpointed an issue with Fanboost as a contributing factor to his defeat at the Marrakesh ePrix.
Buemi captured pole position around the streets of Marrakesh and preserved a slender advantage for much of the race, before being passed by Felix Rosenqvist late on.
However, Buemi reckons he would have been better placed to defend against Rosenqvist's attack had he been able to use Fanboost, having been one of three drivers to receive the advantage.
Renault detected a water pump issue with his first car, and therefore swapped the order in which he used his machines during the 33-lap race.
As a result, his first car became his second car, and it was not set-up to deploy Fanboost, which is only permitted during the latter half of the race.
"I had an issue with the water pump and it wouldn't start so we had to switch cars, so the car I started with was supposed to be the second one," said Buemi.
"Because of this we didn't get Fanboost sorted properly.
"So I think Felix had a bit more pace in the second stint, not much, but then I was overtaken at the end and I thought I would leave it to the last minute to use Fanboost, but it didn't work.
"I was annoyed, I didn't properly move over to the inside and he managed to pass me, otherwise I would've closed the door a bit better, so I don't know what happened.
"He had a little more pace and he deserved the win, so I don't really think second is bad, but a big disappointment when you lead for most of the race."
2015/16 champion Buemi moved into sixth place in the standings, 32 points behind Rosenqvist.
