Tyre test called off amid security concerns

13 November 2017 – Pirelli's planned tyre test with McLaren at Interlagos has been called off, amid security concerns, with the manufacturer the latest to be attacked when leaving the circuit after Sunday's Grand Prix.

McLaren was set to stay on after the race to help Pirelli, as part of the manufacturer's 2018 development programme, but the test, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, will no longer go ahead.

Five incidents involving F1 personnel were reported over the Grand Prix weekend.

Members of the Mercedes team were robbed at gunpoint when travelling from the circuit to their hotel in a minibus on Friday night; although they escaped unharmed, a gun was held to one person's head.

Williams, Sauber, FIA and Pirelli staff were also caught up in attacks.

"Following a robbery attempt, neutralised by Pirelli security, on a Pirelli van at the Interlagos circuit [on] Sunday – after a weekend where similar episodes occurred with other teams – it has been decided to cancel the tyre test planned [at] the Brazilian circuit with McLaren," read a statement issued by Pirelli.

"The decision, shared with McLaren, FIA and Formula 1, was made in the interest of the safety of the personnel, both McLaren's and our own, who would have participated in the test."

European Formula 3 champion Lando Norris was set to carry out running for McLaren at the test, but the youngster will now head to Macau for this weekend's Grand Prix.
