Hayden in intensive care after accident

18 May 2017 – Nicky Hayden is in intensive care following a cycling accident on Wednesday.

Hayden, who claimed the MotoGP championship back in 2006, was out cycling in the city of Rimini, on the Adriatic coast, when a car struck him.

Shortly after reports surfaced in local media, the Superbike World Championship, in which Hayden races, confirmed that the American had been involved in an incident, with no word on his condition.

Hayden's team, Red Bull Honda, has now clarified that he was initially taken to a hospital near Rimini, before being transferred to Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena.

He remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.

"Following the incident, Nicky was treated on site by medical staff and then taken by ambulance to a hospital near Rimini for immediate treatment," read a statement.

"Once Nicky's condition was stabilised, he was transferred to Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in Cesena and remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.

"Members of Nicky's team and his fiancé are with him in the hospital.

"We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and messages of support and the assistance of emergency and medical services.

"Once an official statement regarding Nicky's condition is released by the hospital or Nicky's family, a further update from the team will be issued."
